Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL, a proud affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes and the San Antonio Rampage, have announced that rookie defenseman David Pszenyczny and rookie forward Tommy Maxwell have each agreed to terms on a contract for the upcoming 2006-07 season.
Pszenyczny and Maxwell will first compete against one another at the fourth annual NHL Pacific Division Shootout rookie tournament in El Segundo, Calif. from Sept. 8-12. Pszenyczny will skate for the Phoenix Coyotes rookie team while Maxwell will team up with prospects from the Anaheim Ducks.
Pszenyczny, 21, tallied a career-high 15 goals and 53 points in 58 games split between the Mississauga Ice Dogs and Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League during the 2005-06 season to finish 10th among OHL defensemen in scoring. The Sterling Heights, Mich. native paced the Colts to the OHL semifinals with 12 assists and 14 points in 14 games before falling to the eventual champion Peterborough Petes. Pszenyczny also appeared in two regular season games and two playoff contests with the Muskegon Fury of the United Hockey League at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season. He completed his junior career with 51 goals, 82 assists, and 133 points in 261 games.
Maxwell, 20, also concluded his junior hockey career last season by recording a career-best 15 goals and finishing with 23 points and 147 penalty minutes in 60 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League. A native of Spokane, Wash., Maxwell served as an alternate captain in 2005-06 and helped the Tigers secure a fourth consecutive WHL playoff berth. He was a member of the 2003-04 Tigers squad that captured the WHL Championship and appeared in the Memorial Cup, and he also earned an invitation to New York Rangers training camp prior to last season. Maxwell tallied 33 goals, 40 assists, 73 points, and 466 penalty minutes in 244 games during a four-year junior career.
"These are two excellent prospects that have the ability to compete for jobs in the American Hockey League, and we're happy to announce that both have made commitments to our organization this coming season," said RoadRunners General Manager and COO Ray Delia. "David has been one of the premier defensemen in the OHL over the last few years, while Tommy brings a championship resume along with tremendous determination and leadership skills. Both will get an opportunity to showcase their talents at the rookie tournament and then in training camp with San Antonio and Portland, respectively. We look forward to monitoring their progress and will be fortunate to have them on our roster come October."
The RoadRunners and Las Vegas Wranglers will tangle in a home-and-home pre-season series at 7:05PM on Thursday, October 12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and at 7:15PM on Friday, October 13 at the Alltel Ice Den in North Scottsdale.
