Roadrunners Move Into Second With Victory

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners moved into second place in the United League standings after defeating the Amarillo Dillas 16-5 Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The win moves the Roadrunners a half game in front the Dillas for second in the ULB standings.

Danny Rondon (6-1) picked up his sixth win of the season after he allowed five runs, one earned, on 11 hits in seven innings of work.

The Roadrunners (45-34) got on the board in the bottom of the first against Amarillo starter Taylor Allen (5-4) starting with Hector Garanzuay reaching on a fielder's choice and then moving to second on a single by Sergio Guerrero. A walk to Hunter Owen loaded the bases for Robert Matlock who then hit a two-run single to right field that allowed Garanzuay and Guerrero to score giving Edinburg the early 2-0 lead.

Amarillo (44-34) responded with a run in the top of the second after an RBI fielder's choice by Justin Wenger allowed Andrew Wong to score cutting Edinburg's lead 2-1.

In the bottom of the third the Roadrunners sent nine hitters to the plate scoring five runs on seven hits. Matlock highlighted the inning with another two-run single extending the Roadrunners lead to 7-1.

Edinburg's first five batters in the bottom of the fifth reached safely against Dillas reliever Justin Phillips with the first four coming in to score making it an 11-1game.

In the top of the sixth a fielding error allowed Wong to score from third keeping the inning alive for Keanon Simon who then hit a two-run double that allowed Wenger and Eric Brown to score making it an 11-4 game in favor of the Roadrunners.

Edinburg sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and scored five runs on four hits with Garanzuay highlighting the inning with his first home run of the season extending the lead to 16-4.

The Dillas scored one run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Trent Lockwood driving in Carlos Figueroa making it a 16-5 game. The game was called in the middle of the seventh due to inclement weather giving Edinburg the 16-5 victory.

Tuesday marks the first game of the 2009 United League Baseball playoffs and tickets are now on sale. Eric Montoya (5-4) is expected to face Dustin Taylor (4-6) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
