Roadrunners Hold on to Defeat Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners completed Sunday night's suspended game with a 6-4 win over the McAllen Thunder Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (23-14) got on the board in the top of the first against McAllen starter Alex Smith. A sacrifice fly with runners on the corners by Derek Perren allowed Vincent Blue to score for the 1-0 lead.

When play resumed, the Thunder (12-25) rallied in the bottom of the fourth with three runs off of Osvaldo Rodriguez. With two outs, Miguel Alfonso hit an RBI single that allowed Mike Demperio to score. After a walk to Brian Nichols, Matt Redding lined a two-run single to left that allowed Nick Mahin and Alfonso to score giving McAllen the 3-1 lead.

Edinburg responded in the top of the fifth. With a couple of runners on, Wilmer Pino hit an RBI double that scored Cristobal Santana from second. Perren then followed with a two-run single that scored both Blue and Pino to give the Roadrunners the 4-3 edge.

A fielding error by McAllen in the top of the sixth allowed Osiel Flores to score from second and then Blue drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly that pushed the Edinburg lead to 6-3.

McAllen added a run in the bottom of the sixth on Redding's RBI single that scored Alfonso from second cutting the Roadrunners lead 6-4.

Rodriguez (2-0) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on six hits for his second win of the season.

Paul Koss and Julio Castro combined for two scoreless innings of relief. Castro picked up his fourth save of the season giving Edinburg the 6-4 victory.

The Roadrunners will be hosting a post-game fireworks show after Tuesday night's game with the McAllen Thunder. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at www.etix.com.
