Barnes Assists in Regaining Second Place

July 2, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

Starter Steve Barnes (4-1) pitched seven shutout innings and only allowed three hits in the Fort Worth Cats' 5-0 win over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. Barnes walked and struck out four batters. With the win, the Cats gain sole possession of second place in the United League.

Scoring at least four runs remains a stronghold for Fort Worth as their record when doing so improves to 21-3. The highlight of the Cats' offense on Monday was third baseman Brandon Jones who hit 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

One member of Jones' supporting cast was catcher Derek Marshall who finished 2-for-3 with a run knocked in and a run scored as well. Marshall in his last four games has batted 9-for-15 with five runs scored and two runs batted in.

Shortstop Shelby Ford is starting a little hot streak of his own, hitting 2-for-4 with two runs on Monday after a 3-for-4 performance Sunday in which he had three runs batted in, two scored, and was a homerun away from the cycle.

Rio Grande Valley starter Celson Polanco (5-2), one of the top starters in the United League coming in with a 1.10 ERA, suffered the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in his seven innings of work. Polanco struck out four and walked one.

The Fort Worth Cats, with a record of 21-16, could have a two or three game gap between themselves and the first-place Edinburg RoadRunners depending on the late game between Edinburg and McAllen. The WhiteWings record drops to 20-17 and they fall a game behind the Cats in the United League standings.

The Cats and WhiteWings face off for the final game of the three game set Tuesday night at LaGrave Field at 7:05 p.m. Fans at LaGrave will get to enjoy a postgame fireworks show sponsored by Cook Children's Medical Center. There will also be a concert immediately following the fireworks by the Texas Blue Cats. Tickets can be purchased online at FWCats.com or by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
