St. George RoadRunners News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. - Over five hours of baseball culminated in a doubleheader spilt between the St. George RoadRunners and Orange County Flyers on Tuesday night in Southern California. The RoadRunners took game one 7-3 and the home club dominated game two 13-5.
GAME ONE
Timely hitting and an outstanding start paced the RoadRunners to their fifth consecutive victory, a 7-3 decision over Orange County.
Marcos Carvajal (3-0) threw five scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out eight in his fifth STG appearance. Carvajal (3-0) got into a few jam with baserunners, but was able to use the K and the solid defense behind him to keep OC quiet.
St. George initially struggled against Flyer starter Jeremy Zick, who retired the first seven batters of the game. Zick (3-6) allowed an RBI sac-fly to Ryan Stevenson in the third to surrender the lead.
The RoadRunner fourth proved to be OC's demise. Wiki Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Juan Melo single to right. Cody Nowlin plated Wiki with a fly ball to right. Eddy Garabito and Seth Loman provided the exclamation point with back-to-back solo homeruns to push the lead to four.
Nowlin and Garabito added RBI singles in the fifth while Loman scored on a Stevenson double play ball in the sixth.
OC scored their three tallies off reliever Claudio Galva. Bartolome Fortunato pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts in a non-save situation.
St. George had nine hits in the game paced by two hits a piece from Garabito and Angel Sanchez.
GAME TWO
What started so well for St. George ended in a blowout defeat. Orange County, paced by three big innings, beat the RoadRunners 13-5.
Bob Cramer survived a first-inning STG barrage to pitch the full seven innings and notch his sixth victory.
Angel Sanchez capped off the first inning scoring with a two-run double to left after Juan Melo singled in Ryan Stevenson earlier.
OC answered quickly off righty Mario Talj, making his GBL debut. Talj allowed four hits, two walks and hit a batter in the OC four-run frame. Jeff Van Houten and Jermy Acey each had RBI doubles with C Josh Arhart plated two more with his two-bagger.
The OC third was Talj's last inning, but also the most damaging. After a lead-off walk and a double play caused two outs, Talj could not close out a hungry OC offense. Van Houten walked with the bags loaded, Acey hit a grand slam off the base of the scoreboard in left and Patrick Breen launched a solo blast to left in the fateful six-run inning.
Talj (0-1) was blasted for 10 earned runs on eight hits in three innings.
Anthony Pluta allowed three hard luck runs in the fifth. Three walks and two hits plagued Pluta in his sole inning.
John Segovia put a couple of runners aboard, but was able to work out of a jam in the sixth to keep OC at bay.
Cramer permitted an RBI single to Greg Lemon in the fourth. In the final frame, Eddy Garabtio tripled to right and scored after Gabe Mayorga bobbled a ground ball by Seth Loman.
Buddy Morales had to leave the game in the sixth after a small scare. He fouled a Segovia fastball to the ground and the ball rebounded off his right eyebrow. Morales dropped to the ground and the trainer helped to stop the bleeding. Morales was able to walk off the field holding an icepack on his eye. Initial reports indicate Buddy should need stitches, but did not suffer any broken bones around the eye.
Game three of the series is Wednesday night from Fullerton. OC will send eight game winner Andre Simpson (8-4, 5.74) to the mound and St. George will counter with young right-hander Mac Nelson (1-0, 3.60). First pitch is expected around 7:15pm.
