Long Beach Armada News Release

The Vipers came into the game on a five-game losing streak, and they made it six straight after the Armada won again, 5-2, in Calgary. Long Beach scored two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth and used four pitchers to hold off the Vipers for the second night in a row.

Long Beach starting pitcher Ryan Claypool wanted the game to start, giving up a leadoff HR to Nelson Castro. Claypool got the next three batters out to end the inning, but Calgary led, 1-0.

Julian Williams singled in Michael Glomb to tie the game in the top of the third, then took advantage of a pass ball, which fell near the catcher Patrick Arlis. Williams came barreling down the line to score on the surprised catcher to give Long Beach the lead, 2-1.

Ryan Lehr led off the fourth and blasted a deep ball over the 400 mark on the center field wall to give the Crew a 3-1 lead.

Claypool got jammed up with bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth. That brought up the top of the order in Castro, the man who hit the leadoff HR. Castro sacrificed in Jorge Poo Tang {I swear to God, that's his name} with a fly ball to center field. That was all they could muster as Claypool shut down the rest of the Vipers.

Lehr reached first on a throwing error to lead off the sixth inning. Martinez singled Lehr over to second. Dan Trumble drove a triple down the left field line scoring a pair of runs, extending the Armada lead to 5-2.

Nick Bierbrodt, the Millikan alum, took the hill for the Armada in the sixth. Claypool threw five innings giving up five hits and two runs. He walked a pair and struck out three while throwing 91 pitches. Bierbrodt had a quick first inning on the hill, going 1-2-3 to take the Armada into the top of the seventh, up by two runs.

Bierbrodt threw two innings before being replaced by the side-winding submariner, Justin Segal. He ended the inning by fanning pinch hitter Darryl Brinkley on three straight pitches.

Long Beach went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth and Wayne Foltin came into the game in the ninth. Foltin made his fourth appearance. He has one save and a 0.00 ERA going into the game and when he finished, he had his second save.

Long Beach plays tomorrow at 6:05 PM. You can hear the game at www.calgaryvipers.com
