Roadrunners Falter Late Against Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners led by three runs heading into the top of the ninth but the McAllen Thunder rallied and scored six runs handing Edinburg the 9-6 loss Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Thunder (30-42) jumped out to the early lead with an RBI single by Wilson Batista that allowed Antoin Gray to score from third making it 1-0.

Gabe Memmert led off the bottom of the second with a double and then moved over to third on a groundout. Blake Sanders then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Memmert to score tying the game at one.

McAllen answered in the top of the third. Mike Goss started the inning with a double and then came into score on an RBI double by Batista. After a fielding error put runners at second and third, Zach Mandelblatt hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Batista to score giving the Thunder the 3-1 lead.

Another sacrifice fly for the Roadrunners (27-45) in the bottom of the third by Robert Matlock allowed R.J. Harris to score cutting McAllen's lead 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Edinburg got back-to-back singles by Sanders and Antonio De Jesus. A walk to Stantrel Smith loaded the bases for Harris who then hit an RBI groundout that allowed Sanders to score. Matlock then hit a two-run single scoring De Jesus and Smith to score giving the Roadrunners the 5-3 lead.

Tim Haines allowed three runs, two of which were earned, in seven innings while striking out five and walking just one but received the no decision.

Edinburg added a run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single from Matlock, who drove in four on the game, pushed the lead 6-3.

The Thunder had six straight hits to start the top of the ninth against Mike Schurz including a three run home run by Batista that helped give them the 9-6 lead.

Garret Granitz pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season completing the 9-6 victory for McAllen.

Brian Smith (2-0) picked up the win after pitching a perfect eighth inning.

The Roadrunners and Thunder will wrap up their four-game series Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Jose Pablo Oyervidez (1-0) is expected to face Wanel Mesa (0-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
