Windsor Spitfires News Release
(North Bay, ON) - Slater Doggett scored twice and Alex Fotinos made 34 saves, as the Spitfires kicked off their 2014 #NorthernTrip with a 4-1 win over the Battalion in front of 3,186 at The Memorial Gardens in North Bay Thursday night.
The win was Head Coach Bob Boughner's 269th, putting him one ahead of Tom Webster, setting a new franchise record.
Alex Henriksson (7) scored the lone goal for North Bay (14-8-5-1), beating Fotinos with a seeing-eye shot from the point off a faceoff to open the scoring at 12:39 of the first period.
But that would be all the 19-year-old Woodbridge native would give up on the night.
Doggett evened things at 1-1 before the period was out, gathering up his own rebound before beating a helpless Jake Smith (13 saves) for his 11th of the season.
Doggett set up the eventual game winner in the second, flipping a nifty saucer pass to Trevor Murphy (9), who one-timed the feed past Smith to give Windsor (11-16-1-0) a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Jamie Lewis (5) extended his point streak to a season-high seven games with a power play marker that put the Spitfires up by a pair after 40 minutes.
The crucial point of the game came early in the third period, as Ryan Moore was assessed a five-minute penalty for a hit on Battalion defenceman Brenden Miller. Soon after, Graeme Brown was whistled for a hook, putting the visitors down two men for a full two minutes.
What followed was a stellar penalty kill that included 10 blocked shots; three in rapid succession by defenceman Liam Murray.
Doggett added a power play goal into an empty net with just 13 seconds to play, his team-leading 12th of the season, icing the win.
The Spitfires will look to make it three straight wins and five of six Friday night in Sudbury. Catch the game on AM 800 CKLW and TVCogeco Windsor (Channel 11) at 7:30.
