Road Trip For Roughnecks Continues in San Angelo

April 9, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release

ODESSA, TX: The Odessa Roughnecks look to bounce back following a tough loss to the Abilene Ruff Riders on Monday, April 6, 39-24. Missed opportunities in the red zone, penalties, and injuries hampered the Roughnecks during the loss to Abilene. However, Odessa should look forward to the return of defensive players, Ahmad Childress and Elex Reed, as they face the San Angelo Stampede Express in San Angelo on Saturday, April 11. The defensive line must supply pressure on San Angelo QB Trevor Scharer after Abilene QB Quincy Carter picked apart Odessa for 235 yards passing and five total touchdowns.

The Roughnecks offense was productive in the first half of the Abilene game on April 6, however, turnovers and several missed opportunities to come away with points in the red zone were major factors that contributed to the loss, especially in the second half. QB Dennis Gile threw for 116 yards and one touchdown versus the Ruff Riders, and surely he will look to go to WR Torrey Day and WR Jimmy Conner in the passing department. Conner will also be a huge factor on kick returns after returning six kicks for 143 yards against Abilene. WR Frank Hill and WR Sam Griffin could be important targets for Gile in this game if his top wide outs have trouble getting open. Look for RB Tony Taylor to be getting about 10 to 15 carries in the game, but it will be interesting to see how many of those carries will come inside the red zone.

San Angelo is coming off a big win over the Colorado Ice, 48-47, back on Saturday, April 4. San Angelo QB Trevor Scharer completed 68% of his passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns in the winning effort. Scharer will look to continue his fast start by going to his favorite targets, WR Tavarres Williams and WR Antwan Courington. Both receivers caught a combined 14 receptions for 157 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Colorado.

San Angelo's defensive line features fast and talented prospects including DE Jonathan Hamm and DE Clay Harrell. Hamm registered 5.5 total tackles, 3 TFL, and .5 sack against Colorado as Harrell collected three tackles for loss, 12 yards total, 1.5 sacks, and one interception. That D-line will contend with a strong Roughnecks offensive line that will look to redeem themselves following the loss in Abilene.

The Roughnecks and Stampede Express split the 2008 season series (1-1) with Odessa defeating San Angelo, 59-16, back on May 31, 2008 in Odessa. San Angelo stunned Odessa with a 75-72 win on June 7, 2008 in San Angelo. The loss on June 7 is surely something that Head Coach Chris Williams and Roughnecks veterans from '08 have not forgotten.
