Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
ABILENE, TX: The Abilene Ruff Riders (1-0) hope to build on an opening season victory against the Odessa Roughnecks when they face the Omaha Beef on Saturday, April 11. The Ruff Riders came out strong in the second half after leading 17-13 at halftime over the Roughnecks. Abilene QB Quincy Carter had an incredible performance against Odessa going 18-for-31 with 235 yards passing. Carter had five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) in the winning effort.
Abilene WR Chris Morris also had a strong performance with six catches and 83 yards receiving. Morris hauled in two touchdown catches during the second half. The Abilene offense was not the only unit that performed big for the Ruff Riders. The Abilene defense was strong holding Odessa's offense scoreless four times inside the red zone. The defense created three turnovers with an interception and two fumble recoveries. Abilene goes into Saturday's game against Omaha on a short week.
The Omaha Beef are coming off a 52-40 loss to the Billings Outlaws at Billings. Omaha trailed, 20-10, at halftime and were able to put together an impressive comeback, but the Outlaws in the end held on. With the loss, the Beef have now lost two straight road games. Omaha will finish their three-game road trip against Abilene in hopes of snapping the two-game skid.
Omaha (1-2) picked up their only victory back on March 20 against the Wichita Wild. Despite the slow start, Omaha will be a dangerous opponent for the Ruff Riders. Omaha's offense is led by three-year starting QB James McNear. Last season, McNear threw for 2,163 yard and 38 touchdowns. McNear also ran for 575 yards and 11 touchdowns. He will pose as a dual-threat QB to the Abilene defense with McNear's ability to run and pass.
Additionally, the Abilene defense will have to contend with RB R.J. Rollins. Rollins is on the brink of Omaha history on Saturday. He will need just four yards to become the Beef's all-time leading rusher. Omaha holds a dangerous receiving core with Allen Burrell, Javon Bell, and Mike Jones.
Defensively, the Beef will look to pressure Quincy Carter and generate problems for him throughout the course of the game. However, Omaha's secondary will have to account for Abilene WR Mike Carrillo and WR Chris Morris. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Taylor County Expo Center. Next week, Abilene will hit the road as they face Lone Star divisional opponent, Corpus Christi.
