El Paso Generals News Release
EL PASO, TX: The El Paso Generals (1-0) are coming off a very impressive win over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads, 50-17, back on Saturday, April 4 from El Paso. It was the inaugural game for the Generals organization and the end result could not have gone any better for the team and the El Paso community. Starting QB Tommy Jones led the offensive attack for the Generals. Jones went 15-for-30 with 226 yards passing and four total touchdowns. Generals WR DeAngelo Woody had a standout performance with seven receptions for 112 receiving yards establishing himself as the number one receiver for the Generals. WR Cedrick Johnson and WR Lemans Cassier hauled in touchdown passes off the arm of Jones in the winning effort.
The Generals defense made life easy on the offense by holding the Hammerheads to 17 points total. Corpus Christi (0-1) could only manage 129 yards of total offense. The play at quarterback, turnovers, and time of possession were the main aspects of the Hammerheads losing their opening regular season game on April 4. QB Cory Miles went 9-of-24 for 102 yards passing including an interception that was returned for a touchdown. The Hammerhead defense was picked apart throughout much of the evening by Tommy Jones and DeAngelo Woody.
Corpus Head Coach, Roy Salas, will attempt to get his team back on track for the second consecutive meeting against the Generals. In order for Corpus Christi to back in line they will have to make changes at the quarterback position, and they did so by acquiring former NFL QB Michael Bishop. A former Big 12 Player of the Year, Bishop has held several stints with the NFL, AFL, and CFL.
Bishop will lead an offense that is well-equipped with weapons such as WR Nathaniel Dunn. The Hammerheads defense must find a way to put consistent pressure on QB Tommy Jones. If Jones has time to work within the pocket then he will pick apart the Hammerheads defense once again. The Corpus offensive line must provide protection for Bishop in order to have him become settled with the new offense.
If the Hammerheads secondary can be more stingy with the Generals wide outs, then we might see a closer game this time around than on April 4. This is the first road game of the season for the Generals as kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. from CITGO Field at the Central Pavilion in Robstown. The Generals will continue on the road next week as they travel to Odessa to face the Roughnecks at the Ector County Coliseum.
