Green Bay Blizzard News Release

The Green Bay Blizzard has spent the 2006 season fighting for the playoffs, and on Saturday night they took another step closer to the postseason with a 55-52 win over the Everett Hawks.

The Blizzard led right from the start, but the expansion Hawks didn't go quietly. With only minutes left in the game, Everett overcame a 10-point deficit to take the lead, and a last-second FG attempt was unsuccessful, sealing the win for the Blizzard (9-6).

With the win, the Blizzard tied the franchise mark for wins in a season, set last year when Head Coach Bob Landsee took the team to the playoffs for the first time ever.

The play that made the game for the Blizzard came in true dramatic fashion, when they were down 52-47 with only 35 seconds left in the game. QB James MacPherson hit WR/DB Luke Leverson with a gorgeous 39-yard TD strike, and the Blizzard would take the lead, 55-52.

The win puts the Blizzard in prime position to claim their first Division title in franchise history. With only two weeks left in the regular season, the Blizzard enjoys a bye this week, and comes home to take on the East Division-leading Louisville Fire on Friday, July 28th.

The Blizzard is currently 1/2-game behind the Fire (9-5), who have their hands full this week, when they travel to Florida to take on the South Division-leading Firecats (11-3). The Fire hosted the Quad City Steamwheelers on Saturday, posting a 67-60 win over their division foes.

Earlier this season the Fire handed the Blizzard a 45-39 defeat in Louisville, when the Blizzard was in the midst of a 3-game losing skid. They righted the ship two weeks later, when they started an incredible run of 7 wins in 9 games leading up to their season-ending tilt with the Fire.

Friday, July 28th will be WDUZ Fan Appreciation Night, and fans can enjoy $1 Bud Light, soda and hot dogs all night long. There will also be free parking at Lambeau Field. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Brian Noble Talking Key Chain, courtesy of Oneida Casino, and the evening's media sponsor will be WBAY TV-2.
