Central Valley Coyotes News Release
(Bakersfield, CA)- The Central Valley Coyotes and Bakersfield Blitz met in the final meeting in the "Battle for 99" for the 2007 regular season at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield California. The Coyotes howled past the Blitz 51 to 37 and take this seasons three game series 2-1. The win brings the Coyotes to 10-4 and the Blitz to 7-7, the Coyotes also hold on to second place in their division and the 3rd seed in a hotly contested National Conference playoff race.
The Blitz scored on their first possession when former Coyotes now Blitz DeRonn Finley rushed 16 yards into the end zone for a touchdown, his only for the game. The Coyotes responded when "Schutt Offensive Player of the Game" Scott Rislov threw one of his five touchdown passes to LaMonte Jones to tie the score 7-7. The teams then traded touchdowns and the Blitz added a safety to bring the score 23-14 Blitz. With 3:36 on the clock the Coyotes Wes Borba recovered a fumble that set up the final score of the half. With 1:07 left Rislov tossed a 1 yard pass to Borba, the ensuing extra point was missed the score at the half-time was 23-20 Blitz.
The second half opened the same way the first did for the Coyotes when Rislov connected with Jones again for a 24 yard touchdown to put the Coyotes ahead 27-23. The Coyotes ended up taking a 34-30 lead in to the fourth quarter but lost it when, on a broken play, OL/DL Dwayne Parker-Draughon intercepted a Rislov pass that he ran back for a touchdown. The never say die attitude of the Coyotes however than prevailed when they scored on their next possession leaving it up to the defense to protect the lead. That defense stepped up when OL/DL Donyell Booker, who had scored offensive touchdown in the first half, returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. From there the Coyotes added 2 interceptions by former Blitz DS Kenny Haslip and a field goal ending the game 51-37 Coyotes.
The Coyotes will bring their 5 game winning streak back home to Selland Arena next Saturday July 22nd at 7:15 PM to take on the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (10-4). The Yard Dawgz are tied with the Tulsa Talons (10-4) for the National Conference Mid-West Division lead, and are currently the fourth seed in the National Conference playoff rankings. The Coyotes lead the Yard Dawgz in the playoff seedings by win percentage versus common opponents.
The Coyotes now have a strong hold on second place in the National Conference West Division behind the Spokane Shock (12-2) who clinched the Division title Saturday beating up the Stockton Lightning (5-9) 63-44. The Coyotes clinched their first ever playoff birth last week by beating the Lightning 58-46 and are still fighting to secure home field advantage for the first round of the 2006 playoffs.
