York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution battled back from an early deficit to take a late lead, but lost their series opener to the Camden Riversharks 7-6 on a walk-off single by Dionys Cesar in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night at Campbell's Field. The Revs will look to bounce back and snap a two-game skid in the second game of the series on Wednesday night.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Revs played a nearly perfect game the rest of the way until faltering in the ninth.
Held silent offensively through the first three innings by Camden starter Ryan Kulik, the Revs got back in the game in the top of the fourth. Kody Kirkland led off the inning with an infield single and Ofilio Castro followed with a base hit through the right side. It took until there were two outs and two strikes, but Chad Tracy connected on a mammoth three-run homer to left field, bringing the Revs right back within a run at 4-3.
York took a brief lead two innings later. Kirkland was the instigator again, dropping down a bunt single to start off the inning. Wilson Batista drew a one-out walk, and both scored on a two-run double down the third base line by Andres Perez, giving York a 5-4 lead.
York starter Corey Thurman settled in nicely after the shaky start. After being greeted with a leadoff single by Yasser Gomez and walking Wilson Valdez to start the bottom of the second, Thurman retired the next eight batters and 12 of his next 14 batters faced through the fifth inning.
Thurman missed a chance at the win when Camden struck back to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Walker led off the frame with a single to right, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Billy Rice, and scored on a two-out single to center by Valdez (3-for-4).
The Revs responded by retaking the lead, 6-5 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to left by Tracy, who tied a season-high with four RBI in the game.
Walker led off the bottom of the eighth with an infield single and was again sacrificed over, but reliever Edward Paredes stranded Walker at third this time, retiring Valdez on a groundout to short to end the inning, the only time Camden's second hitter failed to reach base all night.
Raul Padron ignited Camden's ninth inning rally with a leadoff walk. A single by Delwyn Young then put runners at the corners with no outs. Val Pascucci tied the game with a single to right advancing Young to third in the process. With the infield in, Cesar ripped a line drive single over Tracy's leaping attempt at first base to plate Young with the winning run.
Michael Wuertz (4-2) suffered his first blown save since being named closer, charged with his first loss since May 9.
Camden's Adrian Martin (5-5) earned the win after working a perfect top of the ninth.
Camden's first inning rally started with one out when Valdez tripled to left-center and scored on a single by Padron. Pascucci later doubled home two more runs on a drive to the base of the wall in right, and Walker added an unearned run on a single to left following a pair of York errors.
Notes: Thurman finished with seven strikeouts in six innings in his no-decision and will head into his next start with 575 strikeouts in his Revs career, three away from taking over second all-time in Atlantic League history in strikeouts... he is two behind Lincoln Mikkelsen who struck out 577 in his Atlantic League career... Perez' double was his sixth hit in the last four games, his fifth for extra-bases... it was the 300th hit of his Revs career, becoming the sixth player in Revs history to reach that mark... it was his 35th double this season tying him for the league-lead and matching his total from last year which is tied for third most in a season in club history, two short of matching the team's all-time record... it was the 110th extra-base hit of his Revs career, tying Jason Aspito for fourth most in club history... it was the 70th double of his Revs career, matching Scott Grimes for third most in franchise history... the walk-off loss is the Revs' tenth of the season, the most in franchise history... it was their fifth walk-off defeat since the beginning of August... York and Camden are now tied 9-9 in the head-to-head season series... York right-hander Zack Segovia (2-4, 7.12) will face Camden righty Aaron Tullo (1-1, 4.30) in Wednesday's matchup at 7:05 p.m... Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, YorkRevolution.com, and on the Shoutcast phone app (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
