Peoria Rivermen News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. (January 17, 2010) - The Peoria Rivermen became the latest victim of the Chicago Wolves as Peoria fell 3-1 at Allstate Arena on Sunday. It was the sixth consecutive win for the Wolves who have risen to within four points of the division-leading Milwaukee Admirals. Peoria entered the all-star break at 22-16-1-3, for 48 points and fifth place in the West Division standings.
The Rivermen are now 0-4-1 against the Wolves this season. Their sixth meeting will be at Carver Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Peoria outshot Chicago in all three periods and 32-21 overall but fell behind 2-0 just 19 second into the second period. Matt Anderson scored the only goal of the first period just 3:40 into the game as he poked the puck between Ben Bishop's pads after he appeared to have it covered. Tim Stapleton notched the eventual game-winner in the opening minute of the second as he turned a quick wrist shot under the blocker of Bishop.
The only Rivermen goal came at 6:12 to briefly put Peoria back into the game. Adam Cracknell redirected a Justin Fletcher slap shot past Peter Manninno for his eight goal of the season. Mannino finished the game with 31 saves to improve to 4-0-0 against the Rivermen. He has a 1.23 goals-against average and a save percentage of.968 in those four games.
Kevin Doell returned the Wolves two-goal lead just 2:59 later on a slap shot between Bishop's legs. His seventh of the year came from Joey Crabb and Mike Vernace. Crabb finished with two assists while Stapleton claimed the No. 1 star of the game with the game-winning goal and an assist.
Peoria's power play, which had scored 15 goals in its last 41 chances (36.6 percent), was only given two opportunities as both teams finished 0-for-2. Bishop made 18 saves and fell to 13-8-2 on the year.
The 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic will be played on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, ME. Defenseman Jonas Junland and center Lars Eller will represent Peoria on the PlanetUSA roster. Both will also take part in the skills competition on Monday evening.
The Rivermen return home on Friday for a 7 p.m. faceoff with the Rockford IceHogs. The ZOOperstars! will make an appearance at the game. Tickets are available at the Rivermen office, on the phone at 309-676-1040 or online at www.rivermen.net/tickets.
