Worcester Sharks News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Worcester Sharks grabbed their 10th road win of the season in another complete team effort in a 4-2 victory over the Sound Tigers in Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon.
Worcester's Danny Groulx had three assists, Jamie McGinn a goal and two assists, and Logan Couture scored his AHL leading 8th game winning goal of the season as the Sharks took over 2nd place in the Atlantic Division heading into the All-Star break.
The Sound Tigers put pressure on early in the first six minutes of the first period but came up empty as Alex Stalock turned away four shots on goal.
"Stalock made some big saves to keep us in early... he allowed us to weather the storm," said Coach Sommer.
After an icing against Worcester, Roy Sommer called a time-out and was very vocal on the bench. The Sharks responded as Cory Quirk scored his 3rd of the season as he batted in a loose rebound past goaltender Scott Munroe after the initial shot by Dwight Helminen at 7:16. A little over four minutes later, Jamie McGinn ripped a wrist shot from the right circle rushing down the wing on the power play at 11:42. The Sharks led 2-0 after the first period of play.
Sean Bentivoglio (14th) got Bridgeport on the board at 3:04 of the 2nd period knocking in a loose rebound on top of the crease. The Sharks got the goal right back just 89 seconds later when Logan Couture (16th) deflected a hard shot from on top of the crease after a bullet from 55 feet by Danny Groulx at 4:33. The Sharks led 3-1 after forty minutes of play despite being outshot 18-15.
After Nick Petrecki and Michael Haley dropped the mitts at 6:21 and Petrecki getting an extra two for roughing, Greg Mauldin's 15th goal of the season on the power play at 7:39 got Bridgeport within a goal.
Bridgeport continued to pressure in the third period but Steven Zalewski (16th) fired a bulls-eye into the empty net from 120 feet to secure the victory for the Sharks.
"We played a desperate team tonight and we got timely goals and key saves. Our big line played real big and that was the main thing," said Sommer.
With the win, the Sharks move to 26-14-1-2 (55 points) on the season.
"Everyone is going on All-Star break in good spirits. We have a lot of confidence heading into the 2nd half of the season. At one point we were trailing the Monarchs by 20 something points and now we are just two points behind with a game in hand....its a terrific feat," added Sommer.
