Peoria Rivermen News Release

PEORIA - The two hottest teams in the Southern Professional Hockey League meet this Friday and Saturday as the Columbus Cottonmouths visit Peoria while the Rivermen Hall of Fame adds a member.

Darren Maloney enters the Rivermen Hall of Fame in a ceremony prior to Saturday's 7:05 p.m. face-off. The 6-2, 200-pound defenseman played nearly all of his professional career with the Rivermen, lacing up the skates in a Peoria sweater for five seasons including the 1999-2000 Kelly Cup championship campaign. The native of Claresholm, Alberta was known for his physical presence in 312 regular season games with the Rivermen, recording 462 penalty minutes with 31 goals and 111 assists for 142 points. In 48 Rivermen playoff games, he registered 2 goals and 13 assists for 15 points with 65 penalty minutes.

The Rivermen have won their last four games and are in second place in the SPHL with a record of 13-5-2 for 28 points, two behind Pensacola. The Rivs are 8-1-0 in Carver Arena this season, but host a red-hot Cottonmouths squad that has won 11 of its last 12 contests. Columbus ended a 10-game winning streak on Friday, the third longest in SPHL history. The Rivermen won the first two meetings in mid-November in Peoria, but the Snakes took the most recent meeting on Nov. 22 in western Georgia. The two upcoming games this weekend in Peoria are the final regular season match-ups between the teams.

Premium tickets are only two for $20 for this weekend's games. Rivermen games can be heard at www.rivermen.net through the Fanzone tab or the schedule page as well as on 93.7 FM inside Carver Arena. All SPHL games are available for viewing via subscription at SPHLLive.com.

Rivs acquire top Havoc scorer: The Rivermen completed a trade with the Huntsville Havoc on Thursday that brings left wing Mike Gurtler to Peoria in exchange for left wing Gabriel Levesque. Gurtler recorded 4 goals and 11 assists for 17 points, second among Havoc skaters. Gurtler is in his fourth pro season. Last season with Huntsville, he scored 15 goals with 30 assists for 45 points, tying him for second on the team with current Rivermen forward Josh Harris. Levesque played in seven Rivermen games, registering 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points.
