HISTORY

The second period of last night's season opener featured the Peoria debut of two-time Canadian Olympic women's gold medal-winning goaltender Shannon Szabados. Szabados became the first female player in SPHL history at the end of the 2013-14 season with the Columbus Cottonmouths, and last night was the first woman to skate in a game for the Peoria Rivermen when she entered last night's contest in relief of starter Storm Phaneuf.

FEEL THE POWER

The Rivermen scored their first goal of the year last night on a power-play deflection by newcomer Dakota Klecha. The Rivermen finished 1-for-3 with their man-advantage opportunities last night after they opened last season 0-for-22 on the power play until scoring their first man-advantage goal in their fifth game of the season at Louisiana November 6.

WELCOME TO THE SHOOTING GALLERY

Peoria was out-shot 30-25 by the Havoc last night after the Rivermen finished second in the league in shots on goal for last season with 1903 and finished sixth in SOG allowed with 1697. The Havoc, meanwhile, finished 6th with 1701 shots on goal for and 4th with 1676 shots against.

TURNING THE TIDE

Last night's loss marked the second straight opening night loss for Peoria. Last season, the Rivermen lost 3-1 to Pensacola on Opening Night before beating the Ice Flyers 4-0 the following night. After a regulation loss last season, the Rivermen were 7-4, outscoring their opponents by a combined 40-26 in those games.

WHAT'S AHEAD

After tonight's game the Rivermen will rematch Huntsville tomorrow night at Carver Arena before hitting the road for a pair of games against the Macon Mayhem next Friday and Saturday. On November 2 Peoria will play a 9:30 AM game at expansion Evansville, and then will return home to host the Pensacola Ice Flyers November 4 & 5 after the Ice Flyers swept Peoria in the 2016 President's Cup Finals.

STUMBLING OUT OF THE BLOCKS

The Rivermen enter tonight's contest after falling 6-1 to Huntsville in last night's season opener. The Rivermen and Havoc were tied 1-1 through one period before Huntsville scored five unanswered goals to take the victory. The loss marks Peoria's second consecutive opening-night loss, and the first time the Havoc have beaten the Rivermen since a 3-1 decision in Huntsville March 14, 2015.

THE SERIES

Tonight will be the second of five meetings between the Rivermen and Havoc this season, with the first coming in last night's 6-1 Rivermen loss. After tonight, Peoria and Huntsville next meet November 12 in Peoria, and they will play single games in Huntsville on November 19 and December 1. Last season Peoria swept the season series, winning December 20 at Huntsville before taking pairs of games January 1 & 2 in Peoria, and January 15 & 16 and March 11 & 12 in Huntsville.

SCOUTING THE HAVOC

The Havoc enter play tonight having received offensive contribution from several players in last night's season opener, including three assists from former captain Stuart Stefan and a pair of goals from former Knoxville Ice Bear Lou Educate. Huntsville also started the season with a strong goaltending performance by Adam Courchaine, as the former Louisiana IceGator stopped 24 of 25 shots and allowed a lone power-play goal en route to his first victory of the season.

A FAMILIAR FOE

Rivermen center Josh Harris enters his third season with the Rivermen after he played his first SPHL season with the Havoc in 2013-14. Harris posted 20 goals and 25 assists in 50 games for the 2013-14 Havoc, adding a goal and assisting on four more in five playoff games. He joined Peoria for the 2014-15 campaign and was the Rivermen's leading scorer, skating in all 56 games, scoring 23 goals and 25 assists. The 27-year-old missed most of last season with a knee injury and returned to play in eight regular season games and five postseason contests.
