Rivermen fall in shootout at Albany

Albany, NY (October 18, 2006) - In control of the game until later, the Peoria Rivermen gave up two goals in the final 3:07 of regulation and ultimately lost in a shootout 3-2 to the Albany River Rats on Wednesday evening at Pepsi Arena in front of 2,362.

The River Rats outscored Peoria 2-1 in the shootout with left wing Matt Murley registering the game-winning goal. In fact, Murley set up all three Albany tallies, scoring its first goal and assisting on the tying marker.

Albany (3-1-0-0) began its late rally, notching a rebound goal with 16:53 in the third period. Center David Gove wristed a shot that hit the right pad of Peoria netminder Jason Bacashihua and bounced off to his right. Murley glided in from the slot and simply tapped the rebound into the empty net for his first goal this season.

With 50 seconds left in regulation, the River Rats were able to tie the score with an extra attacker on the ice. Left wing Matt Murley sent the puck around the net from the right wing corner that found left wing Brad Isbister, who attempted a wrap-around that was stuffed by Bacashihua. The puck rolled out in front of the crease, where Pat Dwyer was able to punch it through the legs of Bacashihua before it could be frozen.

The Rivermen (3-1-0-1) began the scoring during 4-on-4 play at 11:01 of the second period on a delayed penalty call. Left wing Peter Sejna skated into the slot from the left face-off circle and dropped the puck off for Magnus Kahnberg, who snapped a shot from just above the hash marks that sailed over the right shoulder of Albany goaltender Tyler Weiman, just below the crossbar. The goal was Kahnberg's first career professional tally on North American soil and second point of the season.

Peoria doubled their lead at 11:41 of the third frame on the man advantage. Right wing Mike Glumac, who was stationed at the left point, dished the puck to Jon DiSalvatore in the left circle, quickly feeding it to center Trent Whitfield, parked all alone in the high slot, for a one-timer past the glove of Weiman for his second goal of the year.

The Rivermen will play their second game of a three-week, six-game road swing, when they travel to Rochester to face the Americans on Friday, October 20 at 6:35 p.m.
