The Peoria Rivermen were unable to hold on to an early lead as they fell 3-1 on their home ice to the Pensacola Ice Flyers in Friday's season opener. The loss puts the Rivermen at 0-1-0 with a rematch looming against Pensacola Saturday night.
The Rivermen took the lead late in the first period as Timmy Hall came up with a loose puck near the top of the left circle in attacking territory and put it past Ice Flyers netminder Matt Zenzola. The goal, Hall's first of the year, was assisted by Bremner at the official time of 14:36 into period number one.
The Ice Flyers got even in the middle part of the second stanza off the stick of Jeremy Gates when a slap shot from the right point beat Peoria goalie Kyle Rank to tie the game at one, assisted by Filip Bjork and Patrick Divjak at 13:20.
The Ice Flyers took the lead with 9:36 to go in period number three. Joey Holka scored a tally assisted by Corey Banfield and Mike Kreig to go ahead 2-1.
The Rivermen battled penalties late before getting to even strength and pulling the goalie with aboutu 1:15 left to play, even getting a Pensacola penalty to create a 6-on-4 advantage before Gates fired a puck the length of the ice into the empty net to make it 3-1 Ice Flyers with three seconds left on the clock.
