RiverKings Win First Game vs. Mayhem, 4-1

MACON, Ga. - The Mississippi RiverKings (1-1-0) scored two goals late in the first period and single goals in the second and third period to defeat the Macon Mayhem (0-1-1), 4-1, Saturday night at the Macon Coliseum. It was the first head-to-head meeting between the teams in the Mayhem's first game as a franchise.

The game remained scoreless deep into the first period, until Ben Rubin scored his first goal as a member of the RiverKings. He received a pass from Michael Beaudry and finished off the play with 3:19 to play in the period for a 1-0 lead. Just about a minute later, Rubin found Reid Campbell in the slot and he fired home a shot for his first of the season and a 2-0 RiverKings lead with 2:26 left in the first.

The RiverKings took a three-goal lead halfway through the second period. Leo Thomas won a left circle offensive zone faceoff to Ryan Marcuz, who raced around the net for a wraparound try. David Jacobson made the save with his pad, but the rebound went to Thomas in the slot and he rifled in his first goal for a 3-0 lead. Macon got back within two as Mark McGowan scored on a transition play, beating Matt Grogan on a shot from the slot with 5:15 left in the second.

In the third, the RiverKings got their three-goal advantage back as Mark Pustin one-timed a a cross ice pass at the right circle for a power-play goal just 1:24 into the second. Devin Mantha and Dean Willmott got the assist on Pustin's first professional goal.

Grogan ended with 24 saves for his first win with the RiverKings.
