Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, MS) -- The Mississippi RiverKings, off a two-game road sweep of Northern Conference leader Colorado and a Sunday matinee victory over fellow Northern Conference playoff contender Rocky Mountain last weekend, have apparently gained the attention of the coaches in the Central Hockey League.
The bi-monthly Yellowbook CHL Coaches Poll, which ranks the top ten teams in the CHL according to voting by the coaches, has ranked the RiverKings number one in the latest poll, released late Wednesday afternoon (February 18th, 2009). The 32-14-3 RiverKings, on a three-game winning streak and having won seven of their last nine (7-0-2), earned 134 points in the balloting. The vote totals, on a 10-9-8-7-6, etc. voting scale, included seven first-place votes. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams in the poll.
Colorado, which the RiverKings defeated 5-2 and 5-3 last Friday and Saturday, fell to the number two spot in the poll with six first place votes and 133 points. Southeast Division leader Texas is ranked third for another week, while Bossier-Shreveport, which stands second in the Northeast Division standings to the RiverKings, moves from fifth in the last poll to fourth in the current rankings.
Odessa, the Southwest Division leader which lost twice to Texas last weekend, fell from second to fifth in the current ratings.
The other teams in the top ten in order are Oklahoma City sixth, Laredo seventh, Rocky Mountain eighth, Rio Grande Valley ninth and defending league champion Arizona is ranked tenth.
