Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN—The Memphis RiverKings, in cooperation with Maddox Sports and Hernando Youth Sports, are preparing to launch their first annual charity golf tournament benefiting the Jr. StreetKings and RiverKings.

The shotgun start, two-flight, scramble tournament will be played Friday, Oct. 8 at The Club at North Creek. Golfers will receive complimentary lunch, post-tournament dinner awards banquet, RiverKings polo shirt and gift bag and complimentary Great River Beverages drinks.

Golfers will also have the opportunity to get a group photo for a $10 donation, to participate in putting, driving and closest-to-the-pin contests; and get autographs from RiverKings players and mascots.

‘Kings team captain Don Parsons, who serves as director for the youth hockey leagues, will participate in the tournament along with his fellow stick-handlers.

"The leagues provide kids the opportunity to play hockey under professional supervision," Parsons said. "They also promote recreation, self-confidence and teamwork; the coaches offer positive role models; and the teams provide positive alternatives for after-school activities.

"Plus, it's a great opportunity for parents to interact with their children and with each other. It's turned into a great activity for the whole family."

Parsons said he's also been pleased to see the team offer a few scholarships to young people who need financial assistance to play through corporate partners.

"If you're familiar with hockey, you know it costs a good deal of money to play, especially for a growing kid shedding sizes every few months," Parsons said. "And ice time is a real bear in operating costs. Those are just a few of the things the tournament money will help with, in addition to scholarships."

Cost per 4-person team is just $500 and $125 for individuals, with all proceeds benefiting the Jr. StreetKings and RiverKings through Hernando Youth Sports. The first flight will be at 8 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. Other major sponsors include Great River Beverages, Country Ford in Southaven, Krispy Kreme doughnuts on Elvis Presley Blvd., WHBQ Sports 56 (560 AM), Time Warner Cable, Chick-Fil-A, First Choice Catering and Signs Now.

The RiverKings are also soliciting hole sponsors and donated items for raffle prizes and golfers' goodie bags. To get involved, call the RiverKings at 662-342-1755.
