RiverKings to host mass wedding
January 15, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
People often express their love for each other on Saint Valentine's Day. Couples generally spend Feb. 14 sending each other cards, candy and flowers.
Some of them even get married on Valentine's Day. Very romantic, you might say, but the Mississippi RiverKings can help literally throw the icing on the cake.
The RiverKings will host a mass wedding on the ice at the DeSoto Civic Center following the conclusion of their game against the Odessa Jackalopes on Thursday, Feb. 14. However, couples can't simply show up at the game and expect to tie the knot. For starters, anyone wanting to get married needs to reserve a spot with the RiverKings. Couples should contact the office at (662) 342-1755 to get a space on the ice.
Interested couples will also have to complete the necessary steps that state law mandates. They should apply for marriage licenses at the DeSoto County Clerk's Office on Losher Street in Hernando. Each couple will need to pay 21 dollars for the license with cash, a cashier's check, or money order. Both people need to come to the office for this, as well. However, couples acting impulsively should know that they cannot merely show up at the office on Valentine's Day. Each marriage license has a three-day waiting period. Furthermore, anyone less than 21 years of age who wants to get married will need signed parental consent.
Couples can actually print the marriage license application from their computers. They can surf the Internet to http://www.desotoms.com, where they will notice a pull-down menu on the left that lists the county departments. They can click on that menu and then click on the circuit court clerk's office tab. That office's home page has several links on the left side. "Print a Marriage License Application" sits near the bottom. Click on that to download a PDF file of the application.
Additionally, the couple will need to take a blood test with the DeSoto County Health Department. The test costs 13 dollars per person, and the couple can take the test in one of two places. The health department location on Highway 51 in Hernando conducts the tests on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The location on Cockrum Road in Olive Branch runs them on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. Couples should allow three to five working days for test results.
For more information on the mass wedding ceremony itself or to make a reservation, please call the RiverKings at 342-1755. For more information on the marriage license process, call the DeSoto County Clerk's Office at 429-1326. For more information on the blood test process, call the DeSoto County Health Department at 429-9814.
