Mississippi RiverKings News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Dillan Fox and Ryan Marcuz netted a pair of goals apiece and the RiverKings took down the Marksmen 5-4, for their second win in two nights, 5-4.
Unlike the battle with the Marksmen on Friday night, the RiverKings jumped on the board first, midway through the first period. Ryan Marcuz found the back of the net at the 6:41 mark of the first period to take the RiverKings up 1-0. The score would remain that way through the remainder of the period and immediately out of the gate in the second; the RiverKings doubled their lead. Dillan Fox positioned himself in the high slot and expertly redirected a wrist-shot from Kristaps Bazevics that beat Fayetteville goalie Matt Leon, only 26 seconds into the middle frame.
Fayetteville cut the lead in half shortly over six minutes later when former RiverKing Jamie Hill turned around and wristed a shot over Tyler Green's shoulder making the game 2-1 in favor of the RiverKings. The two-goal lead was regained quickly when Vytal Cote fired a rocket from the point that sailed through traffic and bested Leon for the 3-1 RiverKings lead.
Making it interesting the Marksmen came charging back scoring two unanswered off the sticks of Tommy Fiorentino and Jake Hauswirth to tie the game at three goals apiece. Mississippi and Ryan Marcuz battled back late in the second period. Marcuz and Fox's tic-tac-toe passing opened the net, and Marcuz buried his second of the night to regain the lead for the RiverKings 4-3. Fox wasn't done there; he ended his four-point night with a goal of his own with less than five minutes to go in the second period, increasing the lead 5-3.
Out of the locker room in the third period, Fayetteville chipped back at the RiverKings lead with a mid-period goal from Paul Russell. The team's third goal on the power-play brought the hometeam Marksmen within one, but the RiverKings defense and goaltending fought off several late onslaughts including one right at the buzzer to take the victory, 5-4.
The RiverKings finish up the road portion of their regular season on Tuesday with a battle against the Ice Flyers in Florida. After that, the team returns home to Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center for their remaining four games.
