RiverKings Spotlight MYHL on Opening Night

October 12, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings will feature the Memphis Youth Hockey League (MYHL) as a nonprofit partner for the team's Home Opener against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on October 16.

The MYHL provides an opportunity for children and adults of all ages to learn and enjoy hockey in a fun and relaxed environment. The recreational league is the largest division within the MYHL and boys and girls as young as 5 are encouraged to participate. MYHL also runs an adult hockey division open to anyone 18 years or older, for all skill levels.

The MYHL is a non-profit USA Hockey organization dedicated to the development and promotion of youth hockey in the Greater Memphis area.

"We provide a great opportunity to play an incredible sport," MYHL president Kerry Frankland said. "Hockey is an amazing and exhilarating game, so once our participants get involved, they usually stay for a long time. It's a game you can play well into adulthood."

Last season, Christian Brothers, Collierville, Germantown, and North Mississippi competed in the more competitive high school division. Following the end of the regular season the teams play for the RiverKing Cup-an annual postseason tournament to decide which team will continue on to the Tennessee State Championship playoffs (The Predators Cup Tournament).

Amateur hockey has served the Mid-South region for numerous years. Dating back into the 1990's the Memphis Amateur Hockey League (MAHL) was in place to promote hockey and manage a youth sports ice hockey league.

Today, the MYHL has expanded to help serve more children over a larger geographic area. People have come from as far as Jonesboro, Ark., Tupelo, Miss., and Jackson, Tenn. to participate and understand first hand the thrill of playing hockey.

Beyond helping children understand the basic fundamentals of being on the ice, skating, shooting, and scoring, MYHL as an organization helps spread the message of sportsmanship and caring-both on the ice and in the community, a mentality shared from the top down.

Each year, the MYHL conducts an annual Skate-A-Thon to help raise money for Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. They also provide "Learn to Skate" and "Learn to Play Hockey" clinics to help serve the greater Memphis community by providing youth a sports outlet through organized youth sports activities.

"Not only do the kids develop friendships that can last a lifetime, as a collective group we all learn to help others and help make our communities a better place," Frankland said. "It's very rewarding to be able to help others learn and gain an appreciation for the sport and the fellowship it provides."

To help continue their mission of serving the hockey needs of the greater Memphis area, the MYHL is always looking for people to help in roles both on and off the ice, monetary donations to help fund scholarships and the Learn to Play Hockey program, and new or used equipment to outfit their participants. Please visit the organization's website at www.memphisyouthhockey.com or email info@memphisyouthhockey.com for more information.

The Mississippi RiverKings are supported by their community partners, season ticket holders, fans, and by program-related investments of the Maddox Foundation, an independent private foundation based in Hernando, Miss.
