EVANSVILLE, IN --- A four-goal first period spurred the Evansville IceMen to a 5-3 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings in the final pre-season game for both teams. Evansville and Mississippi ended the pre-season 1-2-0.

Evansville started the game with an unassisted goal from John DiPace, followed by goals by Niklas Lindberg, Damien Surma, and Bo Cheesman's goal in the final minute of the period made it 4-0 before the RiverKings could answer.

Matt Summers netted the counter for the RiverKings with 17 seconds left in the frame, assisted by Anthony Battaglia and Jordan Lane to break up the shut out bid.

Lane got Mississippi its second goal of the game at 16:23 of the second period on an assist from Tyler Sheldrake to cut the deficit to 4-2. Ryan Kretzer scored the third Mississippi goal at 4:44 of the third period to get the RiverKings within one with about 15 minutes to play.

But there would be no further scoring until the final 40 seconds, after the RiverKings pulled its goaltender while on the penalty kill. Brian Bicek broke free and netted an empty net goal for the final 5-3.

Each team has 37 shots on goal. Mississippi failed to score in six power play chances, while Evansville was 2-for-7. Brant Hilton took the loss for the RiverKings with a 33 save effort. Evansville split time with both of their remaining goaltenders and starter Matt Lundin was credited with the victory.

Mississippi opens the regular season Friday night at Bossier-Shreveport and the home opener is Saturday, also against the Mudbugs at 7:05 PM. For ticket information, call 662-342-1755 or go online to www.riverkings.com today!
