Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- Memphis RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin McClelland announced today that the Central Hockey League team released veteran winger Don Parsons from his contract this week. This action allows Parsons to sign with the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League (UHL). The Mallards are announcing the signing today.
"We wish him all the luck," McClelland said. "We had hoped that he would have stayed within the organization, but he wanted to continue his playing career. We wish him the best of luck with Quad City and in the UHL."
Parsons, 37, played six seasons with the RiverKings, helping the team to back-to-back CHL President's Cup Championships in 2002 and 2003. Parsons was a CHL MVP for 2001-02 and 2002-03 as well as the Playoff MVP in 2002. The Boston, MA native led the CHL in goals scored three different seasons in 01-02, 02-03 and 04-05 with 54, 57 and 55, respectively. Parsons was also honored for his work off the ice in 2003-04 with the CHL Man of the Year Award.
Parsons leaves the RiverKings as the franchise's all-time leader in games played (367), points (552) and goals scored (290). Entering his 14th season, Parsons has played in a total of 811 games, scored 585 goals and assisted on 540 others.
His total of 1125 points makes him one of 50 players in minor-pro hockey history to surpass the 1000 point mark.
The Mallards are one game into the UHL season and are 0-1 after a 9-2 loss to Muskegon Saturday night. They play at Rockford tomorrow night.
Coach McClelland also announced today that the team has signed defenseman Will Bodine and placed him on their extended training camp list. Bodine was recently waived by the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL after playing with the Lynx in his rookie season last year. He is a North Massapequa, NY native and played four seasons at Hobart College prior to turning pro.
