Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, MS -RiverKings hockey players used their status as celebrities to help others this week as they collected more than $11,000 for the Jr. StreetKings youth roller hockey league during a live auction of special New Year's Eve jerseys on Tuesday night. For more information call (662)-342-1755 or go to www.RiverKings.com .
A jersey auction isn't uncommon, but the marked difference in this year's live auction was the beneficiary. Team owner Robin Grindstaff Costa said the youth roller hockey league is a favorite of hers because of the benefits it offers to children.
"The Jr. StreetKings offers constructive fun," Costa said. "It teaches teamwork and responsibility. Because RiverKings players coach and run the league, it stresses good citizenship. It provides kids with a structured activity in after-school hours, and it allows parents the opportunity to be actively involved in their children's lives as kids make the transition to adolescence."
RiverKings team captain Don Parsons said he's grateful for the way the community responded to the team's efforts during the âKings' December 31st party, following a 6-5 shootout victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Parsons organizes the league and serves as a coach and referee, along with other members of the RiverKings, for the four roller hockey teams.
"This will really help the StreetKings," Parsons said. "Hopefully we can expand the league and offer the fun and benefits of hockey to more kids. We want this league to be for everybody, especially kids who need a safe place to go after school and a positive influence in their lives."
The RiverKings and Parsons' next venture in youth sports will be the development of a junior ice hockey league, starting in the middle of this month. Costa said her purchase of the RiverKings this year is giving her new opportunities to serve the community, in addition to her role as president of The Maddox Foundation in Hernando.
"The team is serving as an excellent vehicle to raise funds for non-profit organizations," Costa said. "I am really excited about all the possibilities open to us to serve the community, and I can't wait to see what more we can accomplish this year."
