SOUTHAVEN, Miss -- No one knows how precious are the moments spent with loved ones better than military families, who sometimes are called away for months at a time. So the Mississippi RiverKings hockey team is aiming to give military families an affordable night out this weekend while honoring the men and women who make freedom possible.

Members of the military will receive half off the price of any seating level for up to four tickets to tonight's game with presentation of military I.D. at the DeSoto Civic Center box office.

"The idea is that a military family of four could come to the game for less than what it costs to go to a movie, and with this promotion, tickets for military personnel range from $5.50 to $13.50," Ticket Director Josh Herbert said. "We felt one of the best ways we could show these amazing men and women our appreciation was to make it affordable for them to enjoy a night out with their families."

The community at large will also reap the benefit of specially priced tickets as the RiverKings kick off the nine-game "Teen Night" series, in which kids ages 13-19 can get a $10 Red Level ticket plus vouchers for a free popcorn and soda every Friday night through the end of March.

Parents of children 12 and under can benefit from a special $10 ticket with purchase of an adult ticket at the box office. The $10 ticket is good for up to three children per adult ticket purchased, and is good for all levels of seating for any game with the exception of the Nov. 15 "Face Off Field Trip" day game for area students.

The RiverKings 9th Annual Face Off Field Trip presented by Belhaven University will see 5,000 children grades 3-6, parents and chaperones this Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 10:05 a.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center. Volunteers are high on the list of needs as the team prepares for the students' visit.

"Quite honestly, we couldn't do it without them," Community Development Director Whitley Rives says. "Volunteers are a huge part of making this event happen every year. A lot of preparation goes into making sure the event layout ensures the safety of each child and facilitating the easy arrival and departure of each bus. It takes a lot of manpower, so we love our volunteers."

Volunteers are needed Monday, Nov. 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and lasting until the last bus leaves the parking lot, somewhere between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Interested parties should call Rives or Sylvia Petty at the RiverKings office to sign up, 662.342.1755.

"It's a really satisfying day for everyone," Community Development Coordinator Whitley Rives says. "There is nothing like watching the excitement and wonder on a child's face as he searches for the answer to an educational quiz question, or simply views his first professional sporting event. And we love it because for this particular game, we gear everything to kids and education. It's all about the kids."

The goal is to use the 2 ½ hour event to introduce and reinforce principles taught in the schools' core curriculum through a medium of live entertainment and sports. This extends even to recruiting RiverKings players to star in funny educational videos based on exercises from a full-color, 32-page workbook distributed to every child that uses hockey to teach everything from parts of speech to math, physics, geography and healthy choices.
