November 11, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi Surge News Release
Air Attack:The Mississippi Surge begins a two game set against the Pensacola Ice Flyers tonight.
Records: The Surge is 3-3-0 for six points tied for fourth place.
Pensacola is 2-3-1 for five points tied for sixth place.
Season Series:This is the first of 10 meetings this season between these two teams. Two different times, the teams will play on back-to-back nights.
Recent Action: The Surge is coming off a 3-2 loss at home to Louisiana last Saturday night. It was the first home loss for Mississippi and also ended the Surge's three game winning streak. Pensacola defeated Knoxville, 5-1, last Saturday.
Blueline Blaster: The Surge's first goal last Saturday came from defenseman Scott Jenks. It was his third goal of the season. Jenks leads all SPHL defensemen in goals.
Fantastic Five: Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn and Rob Campbell are each on five game point streaks, the second longest current scoring streaks in the league. Versteeg-Lytwyn has three goals and four assists in his five game streak. Over the same stretch, Campbell has registered a goal and four assists.
Stingy Surge: Boosted by a pair of shutouts, the Surge has given up just 15 goals in six games and has the lowest team goals against average in the SPHL at 2.50.
Real Pluses: The Surge's three game winning goals have come from Adam Krug, who is tied for the league lead with two, and Shawn Skelly. Those two also lead the Surge in plus/minus at +4.
Bookends: Mississippi has scored the same number of goals, six, in the first period as it has in the third period. The fast starts and strong finishes haven't quite been equaled in the middle stanza as the Surge has managed only four second period goals in six games.
Next Up: The Surge and Pensacola won't have to wait long to renew their rivalry as the two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 here at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
