RiverKings Power Past Havoc, 5-3

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Matt Harrington netted two goals, and Brantley Sherwood added four total points to help the RiverKings take down the Havoc, 5-3 at Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center. With the win, Head Coach Derek Landmesser now has 200 career regular season wins, all with Mississippi.

Looking for their first win of the season against Huntsville and with playoff implications riding on the outcome of the game, the RiverKings wasted no time jumping out to a lead. Only 3:46 into the first period Matt Harrington found the back of the net for the first time on the night, beating Havoc netminder Keegan Asmundson for the 1-0 RiverKings lead. The first period would finish out with no additional goals, and the teams broke for their respective locker rooms with Mississippi leading 1-0.

In the second, Huntsville returned the serve tying the game off the stick of Sy Nutkevitch. His goal at the 8:54 mark of the middle frame helped level the score and change the complexion of the game. Mississippi, specifically Matt Harrington, took no time at all to respond. Harrington took a feed from Brantley Sherwood and muscled a shot through Asmundson for his second goal of the night, and the RiverKings second lead of the evening, 2-1. Later in the second period, the Harrington-Sherwood-Arneson line would strike again when Bryan Arneson lasered a shot from atop the right-wing circle past Asmundson, increasing the RiverKings lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Out of the gates in the third, it was more RiverKings and more Brantley Sherwood. Already with three assists to his credit on the evening, Sherwood found the back of the net to add a tally in the goal column and stretch the lead to three goals for the RIverKings, 4-1. It was only a little over a minute and a half later when Dillan Fox, who has been on fire since his return from the ECHL, added his sixth goal in five games and Mississippi took a commanding 5-1 lead. Huntsville didn't go easily, however, as they added two goals of their own later in the third. Jack Ceglarski beat Tyler Green over the left shoulder to bring the sore to 5-2, and Tyler Piacentini would do the same helping Huntsville inch closer to 5-3. The excitement wasn't finished there, however, as Ryan Marcuz was called for holding with only 1:59 left to go in the third period giving Huntsville the man advantage. Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo opted to pull his goaltender and make it a two-man advantage. The Mississippi penalty kill weathered the storm for 30 seconds, only to be assessed a bench minor and be forced to send another man to the box. Despite having to play the remainder of the game, 6-on-3, Green and the RiverKings penalty killing unit battled to keep the score 5-3 until the final horn.

The RiverKings are back in action on Friday, April 6th when Huntsville travels back to Southaven for the seventh and final meeting between the two teams.
