Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âThe RiverKings, H.T. Ponder's restaurant and FM100 are teaming up to help children with serious illnesses through Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South®, Inc., with an evening of food and fellowship.
The RiverKings players will all be at H.T. Ponder's country buffet restaurant for a "Sign and Dine" session on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The team will sign autographs and visit with restaurant patrons during the dinner hour. There will also be a silent auction with RiverKings merchandise and FM 100 will be present with a live radio remote.
A portion of the price for each meal will be donated to Make-A-Wish. Cost to eat is $12 for men and the special "Ladies Night" price of $9 for women. Children under three eat free, ages 4-7 eat for $4, and ages 8-12 eat for $5. Additional donations will be accepted.
"Make-A-Wish has accomplished many wonderful things for children who have so much against them," Restaurant Owner Tim Ponder said. "It's heartbreaking. These children are so seriously ill."
Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South, Inc. grants wishes for children who have life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. The RiverKings are in the process of raising money to grant a child's wish. Since March 2003, the team has raised $3,100 of the $5,000 needed to grant a wish.
"We want to give children something to look forward to other than doctors, nurses and hospital visits," said Cortney Greene, Communications Coordinator for the Mid-South chapter of the foundation. "We don't claim to perform miracles, but we've seen children smile who haven't smiled in a year in anticipation of that wish. We've seen miracles happen as a result of the spirit of hope born in children, all because of the gift of someone who has never met that child. Wishes are very powerful."
