SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—The message from Memphis RiverKings players Jay Neal and Brad Mueller was clear for the 5th graders at Greenbrook Elementary in Southaven: stay in school and keep up with your studies.

Beverly Williams' and Barbara Edwards' two classes listened as Neal and

Mueller talked about education on Wednesday, March 10.

"Going to school was the best decision I ever made and was a great experience for me," said Neal, an alumnus of Kent State University in Ohio.

Neal and Mueller's visit was part of the Newspaper In Education program sponsored by the Memphis RiverKings and The Commercial Appeal. The 15-week NIE program distributes Saturday and Sunday copies of The Commercial Appeal to participating classrooms. Teachers also receive a "Reading, Writing & RiverKings" workbook with weekly activities to be used, along with the newspaper, as a classroom tool.

The students also got the opportunity to ask the players questions about Canada, hockey and being a professional athlete.

The visit was a special treat for RiverKings fan Kirby Rogers. Rogers brought her RiverKings collection to share with her class.

"I've always dreamed of them coming to my classroom and now it is a dream come true," Rogers said.

Classmate Ashley Griffin, 10, was equally thrilled.

"This is really exciting," Griffin said. "I've been to so many games. Actually too many to count."

After the question and answer session the classroom was divided into two teams to play a game of board hockey. Moving down the length of the rink, scoring and making saves were accomplished by correctly answering questions taken from Sunday's Commercial Appeal.

As part of the Newspaper in Education program each classroom that participated received tickets for each student to the Saturday, March 13th game.
