Mississippi RiverKings News Release
The Memphis RiverKings spent all day Saturday and Sunday with 10,000 Boy Scouts, their leaders and parents, giving hockey clinics and playing games during the Chickasaw Council's annual "Scoutbase" event at the Millington Navy base.
The scouts camped out overnight for two days on the base grounds and participated in many activities, from experiencing life in a western town, in a medieval castle and on a pirate ship to scuba workshops for Venturers, the Boy Scouts' co-ed program for young men and women ages 14-21.
The RiverKings had a strong presence at the event, running a new street hockey game every 15 minutes; with mascots, staff, and the Cellular South Slapshot inflatable, where visitors could practice their goal shooting accuracy.
The âKings will also host "Scout Night at the RiverKings" at the Nov. 26 RiverKings game during which Boy Scouts will come to the DeSoto Civic Center to earn a special hockey badge and enjoy a night of hockey fun.
Trip Crawford, 8, was one of the scouts who attended Scoutbase with his troop. His dad, Hanley Crawford, went along as a chaperone.
The Crawfords live in Germantown, but Trip plays roller hockey at FunQuest in Collierville. They attend several RiverKings games a year.
"We like coming out to the games, that's for sure," Hanley Crawford said. "This is Trip's first season to play. It's his biggest dream to play ice hockey. He thought it was really cool that they had a rink set up."
Trip Crawford wasn't the only one with hockey fever this weekend. Nina Jones, her husband and their troop of Venturers and troop of Boy Scouts made the 125-mile or so trek to the base from Winona, Miss.
The Jones' daughter Rebecca, 15 and two other girls in the Venturer troop participated in the RiverKings clinic and games. After they were done, the girls were so excited the Crawfords immediately signed up both troops for the RiverKings' Scout Night.
"They had a ball," Jones said. "They are so excited now to see a game. This will be their first hockey game and they are really enthusiastic about it."
Community Relations Representative Michael Rice said he loved watching the young people get excited about the game.
"You could tell some of those kids had never held a hockey stick before," he said. "That was the best part of the event, watching the smiles of all those kids. That was the whole point, to give them a chance to play the game."
