Rayz to play last game ever at Memorial Coliseum tonight

October 18, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, Texas – The Corpus Christi Rayz will take the ice for the final time ever at the Memorial Coliseum tonight when they host the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The contest will be the Rayz last pre-season exhibition game of the season, but more importantly, it will be a culmination of more than six years that the Rayz have spent at the Igloo.

Since the Rayz inception in the 1998-99 season, Corpus Christi has had only one home for hockey. For the better part of a decade, the Memorial Coliseum provided the Coastal Bend with an atmosphere unparalleled in professional hockey. The compact venue put fans on top of the action and made for one of the loudest buildings in all of Texas. In the 1999-2000 season, the Coliseum was voted the toughest place in the league to play and the Rayz fans were voted the Best in the League.

On Monday night, the Rayz will bid a fond farewell to the only home they have ever known. This season, the Rayz will move into the brand-new AmericanBank Center. The Rayz will manage and operate the Coliseum as a public ice rink throughout the season, however no Rayz games will be played there. To celebrate the final game at the Coliseum, the Rayz will honor alumni representing the last six seasons in a special pre-game ceremony. In addition, the first 1,000 fans through the door will receive a special Geoff Bumstead bobble head compliments of WB23.

In addition to being a momentous occasion, the game will also serve as the final tune-up for the Rayz before they begin their regular season on Friday in Austin. It is Coach Ken McRae's last chance to see his team in action before making the necessary roster cuts down to 18 players. Tickets are still available. They are only $5 and can be purchased by calling the Rayz at (361)814-PUCK or at the Memorial Coliseum Box Office prior to the game. After Monday night, the Rayz will not play in Corpus Christi until Friday, November 5th for their home opener in the AmericanBank Center.

The Corpus Christi Rayz will begin their seventh professional hockey season on Friday, October 22nd in Austin as they take on the Austin Ice Bats. The Rayz will play the first four games on the road before returning home on November 5th for their home opener and the first ever event in the all-new AmericanBank Center. Individual tickets start as low as $10 and group packages are available. Make your plans to be there as the Rayz open the doors on Corpus Christi's newest attraction. Call the Rayz at (361)814-PUCK for more information.
