Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - The Bees opened the preseason with a little history, defeating the Mexico National Team 14-0 Friday night, and closed the preseason Monday night with a little history, defeating the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-3 in the final professional hockey game scheduled for the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi. The Rayz now move their home games into the new AmericanBank Center.

Ryan Shmyr, last season's team penalty minute leader, opened the game's scoring with a power-play goal 7:16 into the match. He was the trailer on a power play rush and Jason Hawes, who beat the defense for the puck in the left wing corner, found him with a quick no-look pass, as Shmyr was streaking between the slots. Shmyr put the one-timer over the shoulder of Rayz goaltender Brent Zelenewich for his first goal of the preseason. Bees forward Danny Helmers redeemed himself from a minor penalty just over ten minutes later at the 17:55 mark as he picked up a loose puck after coming out of the penalty box and converted on a breakaway with a backhanded goal for his third preseason goal. The goal gave the Bees a 2-0 first period lead and extended Helmers' goal streak to three consecutive games.

The Shmyr and Helmers show continued into the second period as well, as the two collected additional goals in the period. Shmyr danced into the slot from the right side and slipped the puck past Zelenewich at the 4:27 mark and then Helmers grabbed his second of the game with 7:09 remaining by converting on a breakaway backhander. Corpus Christi was answered each of the Bees second period goals, as Frank Werner and Ken McKay each put the puck past Jacque Vezina to keep the game a two-goal differential.

Corpus Christi made it a one-goal game 8:49 into the final period with a power play goal as Bees defenseman Derek Holland sat in the penalty box. The Rayz rallied with momentum and had several offensive scrums in front of Vezina late in the closing moments and had a power play opportunity after a Matt Donskov high sticking minor penalty with 1:02 remaining, but Jason Hawes sealed the game for the Bees with a shorthanded empty net goal with 9.7 seconds remaining.

The Bees closed out the preseason with a 2-1-0 record and garnered their first preseason road win in franchise history. The Bees now prepare for their season opener Saturday night in Austin.
