Mississippi RiverKings News Release


With the hardwood replacing the ice at the DeSoto Civic Center, the Mississippi RiverKings have hit the road for their last major road trip of the season.

The RiverKings face the Tulsa Oilers tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The radio broadcast begins at 6:55 p.m. on Y 96.1 FM. Fans wishing to follow the game on the Internet can surf to www.radiopig.com and listen to all of the action. The RiverKings won the first five meetings of the season between the teams, but the Oilers have won the last two. Believe or not, the RiverKings have one more visit to Tulsa on their schedule. That comes on Friday, Mar. 14.

On Wednesday, the RiverKings play the Wichita Thunder for the final time this season. The RiverKings have beaten the Thunder four out of five times this year. The game at Kansas Coliseum begins at 7:05 p.m. The pre-game show starts at 6:55 p.m. on Sports 56 WHBQ. Those who want to keep an ear to the contest over the Internet can do so by logging on to www.sports56whbq.com. The team ventures into the Centennial State for the only time this season this weekend. The RiverKings drop in on the Colorado Eagles on Friday and the Rocky Mountain Rage on Saturday. Both games begin at 8:05 p.m. The pre-game shows begin on Sports 56 WHBQ at 7:55 p.m. The RiverKings beat the Eagles in Southaven 5-4 on Dec. 15 in a shootout following a brawl at the end of the first period. Saturday marks just the second time the RiverKings have visited the Broomfield Event Center. WEEK REVIEW

Tuesday: Mississippi 3, Bossier-Shreveport 2

Ryan Held scored with 14:40 remaining in regulation to lift the RiverKings over the Mudbugs at the DeSoto Civic Center. Held deflected a Cody Blanshan shot from the left point past Ken Carroll for his 22nd of the season.

For the second straight game between the teams, the Mudbugs scored late in the first period. Matt York scored his third goal of the season with 5.1 seconds remaining on a power play to give Bossier-Shreveport a 1-0 lead. However, the RiverKings came back with a power play goal of their own 3:57 into the second period. Aaron Davis fired a shot from the right half-wall past Carroll for his 16th goal of the year.

The RiverKings grabbed their first lead of the night with 8:22 remaining in the second, as Derek Landmesser fired a wrist shot through Carrol from the right point. Nevertheless, Kevin Cooper tied the game with his seventh goal of the season with 2:44 to go in the period.

Ian Keserich made 26 saves for the RiverKings. Carroll made 26 saves for the Mudbugs.

Friday: Tulsa 4, Mississippi 3

Jeff Christian had a goal and two assists as the Oilers defeated the RiverKings at the DCC.

Christian scored his 20th of the season with 11:58 remaining in the game to give the Oilers a 4-1 lead. However, the RiverKings made a game of it with Aaron Davis scoring his 17th with 8:31 left. Then Chad Woollard banged home his 29th of the year with 4:57 to go to bring the RiverKings within one.

Robin Richards took a slashing penalty with 3:54 remaining to give the RiverKings a power play. Nevertheless, former RiverKings goalie Jeff Van Nynatten made several of 39 saves in the last few minutes to preserve the victory for the Oilers.

The RiverKings grabbed the early lead thanks to Ryan Campbell's eighth shorthanded goal of the season, which leads the Central Hockey League. His 24th goal overall 4:57 into the contest gave Mississippi a 1-0 lead. Tulsa, though, got a goal from Kai Magnussen at 9:55. His 15th on the campaign made it a 1-1 game.

The Oilers scored twice late in the second period. Brendon Hodge's 10th goal of the year on a power play with 5:24 left gave them a 2-1 lead. Then Warren McCutcheon poked home his 29th with 18 seconds left to make it 3-1.

Ian Keserich made 23 saves for the RiverKings, who lost their second straight to the Oilers after winning the first five meetings between the teams this season.

Saturday: Mississippi 5, Rocky Mountain 4

Ryan Campbell scored his Central Hockey League-leading ninth shorthanded goal of the season as the RiverKings hung on to defeat the Rage 5-4 in Southaven.

Campbell's 25th goal of the season broke a 2-2 tie with 1:47 remaining in the first period, propelling the RiverKings to a strong second period.

Steve Makway scored his 10th of the year on the power play with 5:21 to go in the second, and Jason Lawmaster slipped home his fifth with 3:09 left to put the RiverKings ahead 5-2 going into the third period.

The Rage made a game of it in the third. Pat Sutton scored his second of the season at 4:25 to make it 5-3. Trevor Weisgerber banked in his 23rd with 6:30 remaining to bring the Rage within one.

Ian Keserich made 26 saves for the RiverKings. Terry Dunbar made 21 saves for the Rage.

The RiverKings got off to a fast start on Saturday. Aaron Davis scored his 18th goal of the season 5:06 into the contest, with Rane Carnegie following up with his 16th of the year at 6:51. Nevertheless, the Rage quickly tied the game. Brent Cullaton received credit for his 17th goal of the year at 7:28 and Ladislav Kouba netted his seventh at 8:16.
