Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis RiverKings used two power play goals, a stout penalty kill and strong goaltending to defeat the Wichita Thunder for the second night in a row in a 3-1 win Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The next time the RiverKings hit the ice will be in the season opener next Friday night (October 20) versus the Youngstown Steelhounds at the DCC.

RiverKings defenseman Steve Makway started the scoring 4:13 into the contest on a hard one-timer from the high slot. After the first period ended 1-0 Memphis, Louis Dumont redirected a Phil Aucoin pass 6:18 into the second period on the power play. Dumont, who along with Derek Landmesser coached the team last night, was playing for the first time in a RiverKings jersey. Landmesser, also seeing his first preseason action, added the other assist on the Dumont goal.

Like the night before, Head Coach Kevin McClelland watched and evaluated from above. This time it was forward Jason Sessa and Huntsville Havoc Head Coach John Gibson that ran things at ice level.

"It was good both nights to have those other guys behind the bench and allow me to go upstairs and watch," McClelland said. "It's still early and the two games were a good way to start, but there is still work to do."

Aucoin made it 3-0 RiverKings with a power play goal at 15:15 of the second, with Dumont and Ryan Held assisting.

Held finished the preseason with three goals and one assist while Aucoin had a goal and four assists.

After going 0 for 11 on the power play last night, Memphis had better success Saturday, going 2 for 14 while holding Wichita scoreless in 8 power play opportunities.

Wichita's only goal was an unassisted short-handed effort from Jeremy Koning with under five minutes remaining in the game. Memphis had the edge in shots at 42-28 with 20 coming in the second period.

RiverKing goalies Larry Sterling and Eric Marvin stopped 27 of 28 shots. Sterling was credited with the win, shutting out the Thunder for 29:45.
