[AMARILLO, Tex.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), took to the ice for the first time in 18 months, but fell to Amarillo 5-2. The same two teams will open the CHL season next Saturday back in Amarillo.

The Scorpions came out strong with two first period goals. Colby Gilbert gave the Scorpions their lone lead of the game 2:54 into the contest.

Amarillo's David Silverstone tied the game up with his first power play goal. The Gorillas got their first lead when Rich Hansen took a perfect pass from Brent Hughes and buried it, on the only full strength goal scored by either team in the contest.

The Scorpions fought back with the game's prettiest goal. Terry Marchant started the play with a pass to Craig MacDonald deep inside the Amarillo zone. MacDonald, using great vision, delivered a perfect pass to Rob Guinn who scored the back door, power play goal in the second period.

Silverstone would give the Gorillas the lead back for good with his second goal of the night later in the second frame. Brent Hughes added two third period goals, one on an empty net, giving the Gorillas their margin of victory.
