SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Mike Moran had a pair of points, but the Mississippi RiverKings (28-20-2) fell to the Pensacola Ice Flyers (23-19-8) 4-3 on Military Night on Saturday in Southaven.
In the first period, both teams managed to find the net. For the RiverKings, Mike Moran distributed a back door pass for Brant Sherwood to dish in the goal to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead. With 4:12 left on the clock, the Ice Flyers found offensive success behind a goal scored by defenseman Louis Belisle.
The second period of play consisted of offensive fireworks for both squads. The Ice Flyers capitalized on two power play opportunities in the period to generate a 4-1 lead. Pensacola forward Stephen Buco notched two goals in the period.
However, the RiverKings closed the gap late in the second period. Down 4-1, Ryan Marcuz notched an unassisted goal in a scrabble for the puck in front of the net to close the lead 4-2. Forty seconds later, team captain Devin Mantha tallied his second assist of the game by allotting a pass to Mike Moran for a goal to cut the Ice Flyers' lead to 4-3.
In a scoreless third period, the Ice Flyers closed the game by out shooting the RiverKings by five shots. The RiverKings tallied six penalty minutes in the final period.
John McLean (9-6-0) earned the win by deflecting 23 of 36 shots despite leaving the ice in the third period due to injury. Brad Barone (17-12-2) took the loss for the RiverKings by stopping 30 of 34 shots.
