RiverKings extend streak, end Colorado's
January 12, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis RiverKings won Friday night's battle of the top two teams in the CHL and in the process extended a streak while also ending one. The RiverKings won their seventh straight game and ended the Eagles' league record 15 game winning streak with a 5-4 victory in front of 3,750 fans at the DeSoto Civic Center. The RiverKings improve to 24-6-3 and are back to a 10 point lead in the Northeast Division. The RiverKings now head to the All Star break with tomorrow night's game at Oklahoma City postponed due to the ice storm that is hitting Oklahoma.
Memphis scored a pair of goals in rapid fashion in the first period to grab a 2-0 lead. On the power play, Rick Kozak put home a weak-side rebound after shots from Derek Landmesser and Travis Banga for his 14th of the season. Then just 10 seconds later, Tyler McGregor scored on a shot from the high slot after the RiverKings stole the puck following the face-off. The Eagles got on the board with a late tally in the first from Scott Polaski with :15 remaining to make the score 2-1 after one.
The RiverKings scored the only goal of the second period and, again, it came on a rebound. This time, it was Louis Dumont taking a Phil Aucoin rebound on a five on three advantage and slipping it past the Eagles' Marco Emond. It was his 10th of the season and it gave the RiverKings a 3-1 lead entering the third period.
The RiverKings' two goals in the third period that expanded the lead to 5-1 would come in similar fashion to their first period goals. Brad Wanchulak tipped in Bobby Gates' shot at 4:43 for a power play goal and his second of the season. Just 18 seconds later, Ryan Campbell grabbed a rebound that Emond couldn't control and scored his 18th of the season.
The Eagles made it interesting with the last three goals of the night, the last coming at 18:56 to make the final minute exciting.
Larry Sterling was sharp with a 40 save performance against the league's top scoring team. The win for Sterling was his 22nd on the season, two more than Emond's 20 wins. On special teams, the RiverKings went 3 for 11 on the power play, while the team's penalty kill went 4 for 5. That Colorado power play goal with just over a minute left in the game was the first surrendered by the RiverKings in over five games.
The RiverKings now head to the All-Star break. With the postponement of tomorrow night's game at Oklahoma City, the RiverKings won't play again until next Friday when they host the Odessa Jackalopes at 7:05. The first 1,500 fans that night will receive a RiverKings drawstring backpack.
