Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Broomfield, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team took advantage of a cold start by the New Mexico Scorpions, but the Scorpions rallied back to defeat the Rage 6-3 tonight at the Broomfield Event Center.

The Rage fall to 8-19-4 (20 points) for fourth place in the northwest division on the season, while the Scorpions climb back to .500 with a record of 14-14-3 (31 points) for fourth place in the southwest division.

As the temperature dropped below zero on a cold Friday night in Broomfield, the Rocky Mountain Rage quickly turned up the heat inside the Broomfield Event Center. Using their speed early, the Rage earned a 5 on 3 powerplay chance off of a hooking penalty to Jamie Herrington (4:26) and a slashing penalty to Aaron McInnis (5:21). Only 21 seconds into the two man advantage, Chip Dunleavy tipped a Matic Kralj shot from the point over the shoulder of Scorpion's goalie David Cacciola and into the net at 5:42. Less than two minutes later, Dunleavy found the net again on the powerplay, this time on a blueline shot from center John DiPace. Dunleavy's second goal of the night netted the Rage a quick 2 goal lead.

Harrington got the Scorpions on the board late in the first period sliding a puck past a diving Rage goalie, David Guerrera at 15:56.

The Scorpions started the second period in the same fashion they ended the first, dominating the early minutes and blanketing Rage goalie Guerrera with shots. Only minutes into the second period, the Scorpion's Jamie Harrington took advantage of a failed clearance attempt, shooting the puck low and stickside of Guerrera giving Harrington his second of the night and tying the game at 2-2.

The Scorpions capitalized on their momentum later in the second as Craig McDonald took a pass off the face-off from teammate Mike Prpich and snapped a quick wrist shot past Guerrera at 8:12.

The 3-2 deficit didn't last long as Rage defenseman Kralj pounded in a loose rebound shot from Craig Olynick at 10:13 giving the Rage their third goal and tying the game yet again.

Only 1:31 later, the Scorpions intercepted another defensive clearance attempt by the Rage. Held in at the blue line, MacInnis tucked a slap shot over the shoulder of Guerrera and just under the crossbar giving the Scorpions their fourth and eventual game-winning goal.

The final period belonged to the Scorpions who out-shot the Rage 12-6 and outscored the team 2-0. Lance Herauf and Chris Robertson would take credit for the two goals in the third giving the Scorpions their fifth and sixth goals of the night, respectively. Herauf was assisted by McInnis, as he beat Guerrera low and left at 1:47. The final goal, netted by Robertson came from Vladimir Hartinger and Mike Falk at 16:15.
