RiverKings encourage fans to seek alternate routes, arrive earlier

October 23, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN—This year, directing traffic during RiverKings games should be a walk in the park thanks to cooperation among DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department, Southaven Police, DeSoto Civic Center officials and RiverKings staff.

Memphis RiverKings regular attendees are well aware of the traffic congestion on Interstate 55 at the Church Road exit when eager fans turn out for hockey events. So this year, event organizers are encouraging hockey enthusiasts to arrive early and search out alternate routes.

In addition, arena officials have also put into effect a “fast pass” lane. Per-game fast passes can be purchased at the main ticket office in the Grand Hall for $4 each, giving the purchaser $1 off parking costs.

RiverKings season ticket holders were able to purchase a season-long window cling decal in their season ticket packages and DeSoto Civic Center suite holders received a special hang tag that identifies them as “fast pass” users.

Fast-pass lanes will be located at each parking lot entrance. The lanes are designed to cut out the time needed to dig through one’s purse or wallet to make change by simply showing the pass to the attendant when entering the lot, which will in turn eliminate the number of cars—and precious minutes—in the regular lane.

“The fast pass can save people time and energy and allow them to get to their seats faster so they can enjoy all the pre-game activities,” DeSoto Civic Center Assistant General Manager Mike Krewson said. “We are really excited about it and hope people embrace the idea.”

And ‘Kings organizers are making sure it will be worthwhile for fans arrive early by providing a great lineup of pre-game activities on and off the ice. For instance, the team and the arena have put together several tailgating events throughout the year for fans to enjoy, like this Saturday’s concert featuring “The Dempseys” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the Saturday, Nov. 5 “Mudbug Boil” among others.

The county Sheriff’s Department and Southaven Police will be cooperating not only to man the Church Road entrance but also to control traffic at Elmore Road, which feeds directly into Church Road less than a mile to the east.

There are two entrances to the Civic Center, one by way of Venture Dr. connecting to Church Road and visible from the Interstate, and from Turman Dr., which connects to Hwy. 51 on the south side of the arena next to the Civic Center Apartments. Hwy. 51 runs parallel to Interstate 55 from Memphis southward and is accessible from Brooks Rd, Winchester Dr., Shelby Dr., Stateline Rd. and Goodman Rd. in addition to Church.

Fans can also cut down on wait time by getting their tickets in advance. The DeSoto Civic Center box office regular business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. (For more information call 662-470-2131). Fans may pick up their tickets in person or order by phone by calling TicketMaster at 901.525.1515.
