LAREDO, Texas – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks picked up their first win of the year as they captured their home opener with a 4-2 win over the visiting Corpus Christi Rayz in front of a sellout crowd of 8,002 at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Forward Jeff Bes registered a hat trick as the Bucks improved to 1-1-0. The Bucks finish off a three-in-three weekend Sunday afternoon in Austin. In the first period the Bucks killed off several Rayz power play chances. A little over halfway thru the frame Bucks forward Adam Paiement stepped across the Rayz blue line, then slipped a pass backdoors to defensemen Oriel McHugh who had time to settle down the puck and fire it into the net for a 1-0 Laredo lead at 11:22. Late in the period the Bucks struck again as Bes, the reigning CHL MVP, was stopped on the initial shot, but managed to slip in the rebound at 18:41 for a 2-0 Bucks lead.

In the second period the Rayz tallied the only goal of the frame. It came with Corpus Christi working on a major power play chance. Rayz forward Greg Bullock worked the puck backdoor to the left circle where defenseman Mark Jackson gunned it home to cut the Bucks lead in half at 14:21.

The Bucks exploded in the third period. Working on just their third power play chance of the game it didn’t take Laredo long to capitalize. Bes tallied his second of the night as he jammed in a rebound at 5:46 to increase the Bucks lead to 3-1. Just over a minute later Bes was back at it as forward Brent Cullaton fired a shot from the point that Bes redirected into the net for his third of the night and a 4-1 Bucks lead at 7:01. It was the third career hat trick for Bes with the Bucks. Late in the game the Rayz closed the gap as forward Ryan Carter scored a shorthanded goal at 13:42, but Bucks goalie David Guerrera closed the door from there. FINAL SCORE Laredo 4, Corpus Christi 2.

Guerrera was terrific as he stopped 32 of 34 shots and evened his record at 1-1-0. Brent Zelenewich was outstanding in the pipes for Corpus, stopping 27 of 31, but took the loss to fall to 0-1-1. The Bucks finished 1-5 on the power play while the Rayz were 1-8.
