SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Peoria Rivermen (35-16-3) scored three unanswered goals, including two in the third period, to edge the Mississippi RiverKings (31-20-2), 4-2, in a see-saw match at the Landers Center Saturday night.
Once again the teams played to a scoreless draw in the first period, but Peoria again found the game's first goal early in the second period. Cole Ruwe opened the scoring with a backhand shot in the slot that squirted through Peter Di Salvo for a 1-0 Peoria lead. The RiverKings responded with two goals a few minutes later. First, while shorthanded, Matt Harrington started a 2-on-1 with Devin Mantha. Harrington passed to Mantha in the slot and he delayed before firing a shot off the crossbar and in past Dustin Carlson for a shorthanded goal. Just 65 seconds later Dylan Quaile, in his first game back after a stint with the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets, wound up with the puck near the crease and he stick handled then sent a shot in for a 2-1 lead at 6:16.
The RiverKings carried play through much of the second period, until a Peoria power play changed momentum with about five minutes to go in the second. Although the Rivermen didn't score on that one they did tie the game before the end of the second. Steve Morra got loose in front and beat Di Salvo for a 2-2 tie with 26 seconds left in the period.
Peoria carried that momentum into the third period and Morra struck again just 1:36 into the final frame to give the Rivermen a 3-2 lead. They finally got the game's first two-goal lead when Dan Bremner cut across the crease and tucked a backhand into the net, similar to his goal Friday night. The RiverKings would outshoot Peoria, 14-8, in the third period, but the Rivermen picked up the 4-2 win. It's the first time a team has won back-to-back games in the neck-and-neck season series, which has now seen nine games played. They face off again next weekend at the Landers Center.
