Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Backed by Todd Hosmer's pair of power play goals and Dan McWhinney's 17 saves, the Mississippi RiverKings (31-21-4) knocked off the Mississippi Surge (22-28-6) 4-1 in their last game of the regular season on Saturday night.
The RiverKings took the lead midway through the first. Todd Hosmer ripped a Matt Whitehead pass past Alex Scola on the power play 8:36 into the first to put the visitors ahead 1-0.
In the second, the RiverKings added to their lead with a pair. Whitehead intercepted a Joe Tolles pass deep in the Surge zone and buried it past Scola just 2:00 in to put the RiverKings up by two. Hosmer added his second power play goal of the game on a wrist shot from the high slot five minutes later to give the RiverKings a 3-0 lead going into the second intermission.
The teams traded goals in the third. Burke Gallimore found the back of the net less than two minutes into the frame to put the visitors ahead 4-0. But the Surge bounced back with their lone goal of the night with under three minutes left to play on a shot from Trevor Hertz that beat Dan McWhinney, but it was not enough as the RiverKings took the season-finale 4-1.
Dan McWhinney (14-10-1) stopped 17 of 18 shots against to pick up the win. Alex Scola (0-1-0) took the loss in his first professional game after stopping 20 of 24 shots against.
The RiverKings hit the ice to face the Huntsville Havoc in Round 1 of the SPHL Playoffs on Thursday night in Huntsville. All the action airs live on RiverKings.com and stay tuned to RiverKings.com for more information.
