Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
BLOOMINGTON, IL. (March 22, 2014) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers closed out the 2013-14 regular season with a dominating 6-1 win over the Bloomington Thunder. The win was the Ice Flyers' 11th in a row and stretched the point streak to 22 games.
Just like last night's matchup, the first period was scoreless and again even in shots as both teams put 11 shots on net during the first 20 minutes tonight.
The scoring opened quickly in the second period. It started with the Ice Flyers taking the first lead of the game thanks to a goal by Joe Caveney coming only 15 seconds into the period. Brett Lutes and Steve Whitely picked up the helpers. Peoria scored 4:10 later, just seven seconds into a power play, with a goal from Eddie Olczyk that beat Peter Di Salvo. John Dunbar gave the Ice Flyers the lead again just after an Ice Flyers power play expired. He scored with 8:15 left in the second assisted by Jeremy Gates and Lutes.
The Ice Flyers pushed their lead to 3-1 thanks to a ricocheting puck that found the back of the net 3:15 into the third. Ryan Salvis got credit for the goal with Dunbar and Gates getting the assists. Less than a minute later, Dunbar scored a shorthanded goal, assisted by Adam Pawlick, to make it 4-1. A pretty shot from slot by Podge Turnbull made it 5-1 7:49 into the third. Drew Baker and Shaun Arvai picked up the assists. Mitchell Good made 6-1 by pounding in a rebound with 6:41 left in the third. Caveney and Lutes were credited with the assists.
Di Salvo stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced from Bloomington en route to his 11th win of the season. Pensacola swept the Three Stars with Lutes being third, Gates second, and Dunbar named the first star.
The Ice Flyers open their 2014 playoff run Thursday night, Mar. 27, at 7:05 p.m. against the Mississippi Surge.
