SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Brian Ihnacak's goal in the fourth round of a shootout provided the game-winning margin in the Mississippi RiverKings' 3-2 win over Bossier-Shreveport. The win in Central Hockey League action Sunday in Southaven gave the RiverKings a split of a weekend series with their rivals from Louisiana.
Mississippi took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power play goal scored by defenseman Derek Landmesser, his fifth goal of the season at 12:24.
Bossier-Shreveport tied the game in the second period on a goal from Jamie Milam, who scored his sixth goal of the year on the power play at 1:55 of the period.
But, Mississippi momentarily took control of the game in the third period when Louis Dumont scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 7:55 of the frame for a 2-1 RiverKings' lead. The goal was Dumont's third shorthanded tally of the year and tenth goal of the season.
However, Bossier-Shreveport scored a late goal by Jeff Martens with 1:45 remaining in regulation time to send the game into overtime and the resulting shootout.
After a scoreless overtime session, Mississippi won the game with a 3-1 advantage in the shootout. Dumont, Brian Ihnacak and Landmesser scored goals for the RiverKings, while Simon Mangos netted the only shootout goal for Bossier-Shreveport. Ihnacak's goal became the game-winner and was his second goal as a RiverKing.
Both teams scored once on the power play in the game. Mississippi was 1-for-4 with the man advantage, while the Mudbugs were 1-for-7. The RiverKings outshot the visiting Mudbugs 41-31 with goaltender Larry Sterling making 29 saves in posting his sixth victory of the season (6-6-1). John DeCaro lost for the second time against Mississippi and finished with 38 saves in watching his record fall to 9-4-1.
The RiverKings now begin another five-game road trip, starting this coming Friday and Saturday night in Laredo. Both games begin at 7:30 PM at the Laredo Energy Arena.
