Mississippi RiverKings News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn.â More than 750 seats at the RiverKings game tonight will be filled by people who have pledged to give $20 a month for an entire year to help patients at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The team gave away two tickets to every person who called in a pledge during the KIX 106 FM St. Jude Radiothon this year.
Hollywood Casino sponsored the "Turtle Toss" this season during a RiverKings game. The RiverKings sold individually wrapped stuffed toy turtles during several games to raise money for St. Jude patients. The entire RiverKings team toured the hospital and visited with children before the event, during which more than 700 turtles were sold. Afterward, Hollywood executive staff and several team members delivered 300 turtles still in their individual bags to children at the hospital.
"I was moved by the stories I heard on the radio Thursday," RiverKings president Robin Costa said. "I thought, this is such a great cause. We have to help in some way."
The station performs the radiothon every year as part of "Country Cares for
St. Jude," an international network of radio stations that commit to performing individual live radiothons each year. The network was started as a result of KIX 106's original radiothon about 20 years ago and conceptualized as a cooperative effort between stations by Randy Owen, the lead singer of superstar country group Alabama.
KIX 106 Marketing Consultant Molly Jordan said the network is St. Jude's primary fundraiser every year, raising more than half of the hospital's revenue annually.
"It is exciting to see how the Memphis community continues to respond every year," Jordan said. "This Radiothon is something that is very close to our hearts. It's one of our favorite annual events. We love St. Jude and the children who are patients there, and we are very glad we could reward our donors with something nice like the RiverKings tickets."
The RiverKings play the Northeast Division-leading Indianapolis Ice tonight at the DeSoto Civic Center, located just 15 minutes south of downtown Memphis. Face-off is at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call (662)-342-1755 or go online to www.RiverKings.com and use the ticketmaster link.
